Harnessing your sensitivity

A serene view of a calm loch surrounded by rolling hills covered in autumnal tones, under a cloudy sky. The reflection of the hills and sky shimmers gently on the water.

Being a creative means you’re deeply attuned to the world—sensitive to what’s happening inside you and the energy around you. While this heightened awareness can inspire your work, it can also feel overwhelming, especially when big emotions take over.

There are days when this sensitivity might leave you feeling drained, tempted to retreat from the world. In those moments, it’s easy to see your emotional nature as a burden. But what if it’s not a weakness? What if this sensitivity is a vital part of who you are, giving you unique insights and helping you create work with depth and meaning?

This week, I came across a quote from one of my favourite artists, Alice Neel:

"You know what it takes to be an artist? Hypersensitivity and the will of the devil. To never give up."

Her words struck a chord. They remind me that feeling deeply and persevering go hand in hand. It’s this delicate balance—of openness and resilience—that allows creatives like you to thrive.

How Sensitivity Can Enrich Your Work

Your sensitive nature brings with it many strengths, ones that can benefit your creativity and your work. Here are a few to consider:

  • A fresh perspective: Sensitivity enables you to notice details others may overlook—the subtle beauty in everyday moments, the emotion beneath someone’s words. These observations can deeply enrich your art, writing, or ideas.

  • Deeper connections: People respond to authenticity, and your ability to empathise and understand creates stronger relationships—whether with clients, collaborators, or your audience.

  • Adaptability: Being attuned to shifts in mood or circumstances helps you respond thoughtfully to change. This skill is invaluable in both creative projects and business.

Practical Ways to Harness Sensitivity

Sensitivity doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. By caring for yourself, you can channel it in ways that support both your wellbeing and your work. Here are some ideas:

  1. Pause to process: When emotions feel intense, give yourself space to reflect. Journaling, taking a quiet walk, or simply sitting in stillness can help you find clarity.

  2. Set boundaries: Protect your energy by being intentional with your commitments. Say yes to what truly aligns with your values and let go of what drains you.

  3. Create grounding rituals: Practising mindfulness, breathing techniques, or creative routines can help you stay centred during emotional moments.

  4. Celebrate your awareness: Instead of seeing your sensitivity as a challenge, remind yourself of the value it brings—your ability to see, connect, and create in ways that resonate deeply with others.

A Gentle Reminder

Next time your emotions feel overwhelming, take a moment to pause and care for yourself. Sensitivity may feel intense at times, but it’s also what makes your work meaningful and your connections genuine.

As Alice Neel said, sensitivity paired with perseverance is what keeps us moving forward. It’s not about suppressing what you feel but about learning to embrace it and turn it into something valuable.
